Origin: Granted in 1727, this community was one of several established to deal with rapidly expanding population in the seacoast area. The majority of new settlers came from either Barnstable on Cape Cod or Hampstead on Long Island, and the name Barnstead is a conjunction of the two. Barnstead Parade, the town's central highway, was located on the Province Road, which ran between Portsmouth and the Governor's summer house in Wolfeboro. |

Population Trends: Population change for Barnstead totaled 3,795 over 50 years, from 1,119 in 1970 to 4,914 in 2020. The largest decennial percent change was a 105 percent increase from 1970 to 1980, more than doubling the population. The town's population increased by seven percent from 2010 to 2020. The 2021 Census estimate for Barnstead was 4,981 residents, which ranked 73rd among New Hampshire's incorporated cities and towns. |
